Pre-1900s Roothead Brant Decoy - Wilbur R. Corwin
Classic pre-1900s Roothead Brant decoy made by Wilbur R. Corwin (1852 - 1914) Bellport, Long Island, NY. Hollow construction with many years of gunning use. Very old layers of repaint. Large keel with inset weight.
He used to manage the Bellport Gun Club around 1900. His son was famous carver and hunting guide Wilbur A. Corwin (1881-1965). He was good friends with my wife’s Grandfather George Bailey who owned the Poplar Island Hunting Club here in MD in the 1950s. Corwin Jr. was a guide there and made a rig of decoys for the club. Around 25 years ago I met Bud Corwin who gifted me a wonderful pintail from the Bailey rig. I bought this Brant from him at that time.
